Cards and Hurons split in baseball and softball districts
In a showdown of top-ranked teams, the Rogers City Hurons took a thrilling 6-5 win over the Onaway Cardinals in extra innings. That sent the Hurons to a the finals with Indian River Inland Lakes. Rogers City came away with a 10-0 mercy-rule win to take the district title.
Rogers City will travel across the bridge to Sault Ste. Marie to play Posen in the regional semifinals next Saturday. Posen defeated Atlanta 25-1 and Gaylord St. Mary 16-3 to win the Hillman district.
Rapid River takes on Rudyard in the other side of the regional softball tournament.
On the boys’ side, the Cardinals came from behind to score a 7-6 win over the Hurons. The Cards came up with four runs in the last inning. The Cards took a convincing 15-3 win over Inland Lakes in the championship game. They play Atlanta in the first round of regionals in Sault Ste. Marie June 8. The other side of the regional bracket has Norway facing Rudyard.
The winner of the regional advances to the Traverse City West quarterfinal next Tuesday. The state semifinals are June 14 and the finals are June 15. Both will be played in Battle Creek.
