Cross country runners compete at meet on Black Mountain

“It was an amazing meet,” said Onaway High School cross country coach Marty Mix after his team competed Tuesday at an event hosted by Cheboygan at nearby Black Mountain.

“That is absolutely the toughest cross trail anywhere in northern Michigan, and our kids were definitely prepared. I couldn’t have been happier with the performances and the gutsiness of our kids.”

The meet featured teams from Cheboygan, Pickford, Cedarville, Brimley, Inland Lakes, and Pellston, as well as Onaway. Fifty-three runners competed in the boys’ race, while 30 competed in the girls’ race.

Joe Traynham won the boys’ event, while Morgan McLean was 11th, Joe O’Bradovich was 13th, Seth Satchwell was 24th, Preston Badgero was 26th, and Cameron Horn was 32nd. The OHS boys finished third as a team.

Four Cardinal girls participated in the meet, less than required to compete as a team. Signe Magnussen finished sixth, Clare Bastian was ninth, Hannah Materna was 11th, and Kate Olmsted was 12th.

The cross country team is scheduled to compete Saturday at a meet in Rogers City.
