Onaway cross country team fares well at competitive CL meet

The Onaway High School cross country team overcame tough terrain, a hilly trail, and inclement weather Saturday, finishing well at a competitive meet at a new venue at Central Lake.

The Cardinal boys finished fourth, while the girls were sixth, among the 14 teams at the event. The combined placement of a team’s top five finishers brings about its final score.

Joe Traynham led the way for the OHS boys, finishing fourth among the 100-plus runners in the boys’ race. Morgan McLean was 26th, Joe O’Bradovich was 50th, Preston Badgero was 57th, and Cameron Horn was 63rd.

Claire Bastian paced the Onaway girls, finishing 29th among the 90-plus runners in the girls’ race. Signe Magnussen was 38th, Hannah Materna was 40th, Kate Olmsted was 46th, and Tiffany Traynham was 80th.

“We are looking strong right now and the kids are running great,” said coach Marty Mix. “Considering the course and the weather, with rain and temperatures in the 40s, I was very pleased with the performances.”

The cross country team returns to action Saturday at the Logger Invitational at Boyne Falls.
