Cardinal volleyball team clinches share of SVC title

The Onaway High School varsity volleyball team clinched a share of the Ski Valley Conference title Tuesday when it won in straight sets at Bellaire, 25-20, 25-16, and 26-24.

The victory improved the Cardinals’ record on the season to 37-6-3, including a perfect 7-0 in the SVC going into Tuesday’s conference finale at Mancelona. Every other Ski Valley team has dropped at least one match.

“The girls played well,” said coach Steve Watson of his team’s effort against the Eagles. “Bellaire doesn’t make a lot of mistakes and does a good job of keeping the ball in play.

“In the end, though, our attack game was too much for them. As a team, we hit the ball efficiently and effectively, and we did a good job serving at about 95 percent.”

Taylor Ehrke had 27 assists and 11 digs, while Brianna Fitzpatrick and Elise Arkwood had four digs apiece for the Cardinals, who improved to third in the latest Class D state rankings.

The OHS JV dropped its match with Bellaire, 13-25, 18-25, and 15-10. Roxanne Kortman had five kills, Vydailya Letts had seven assists, and Eleana Domke had two kills.
