The Onaway High School wrestling team started its season last Wednesday, taking on Mancelona and Charlevoix.

The Cardinals defeated Mancelona 36-27 with Joe Traynham (112), Troy Klein (160), Matt Tollini (171) and Frankie Ramos (285) each winning by void. Caleb Gabrysiak won by pin in 1:04 at 130 pounds and Juan Janeczek winning by pin at 152 pounds in 52 seconds. Onaway voided at two weight classes while each team voided at 103, 145 and 189 pounds.

Charlevoix defeated the Cardinals 54-18 with the Cardinals earning points on a pin by Trayham in 3:11, a pin by Isaac Nave (130) in 3:20 and a Jesse Watson win by void at 119 pounds.

“With all of our new guys getting a glimpse into wrestling

for the first time, it was a successful night from a learning standpoint. Caleb (Gabrysiak) and Juan (Janeczek) got their first varsity wins and that is always special. Numbers are always an issue and even though we have 15 guys on the roster we can’t spread out enough to cover the weights so we will make things happen the best we can with what we can fill. It is nice to see so many guys in Cardinal uniforms ready to take on the challenge of the season. We will make things as interesting as we can and try to have some fun doing it while working toward the post season goals we have set,” said coach Mark Grant.

The Cardinals will be at the Chippewa Hills Tournament this Saturday.
