Goodfellows brighten many holidays

Once again the Goodfellows have brightened the holidays for many in the community. The group was able to assemble 101 food boxes for families in need this holiday season.

The boxes contained many food items as well as a $25 food card to purchase more groceries to make the holidays special. Clothing items and gifts were also distributed to those in need as the community came forth and helped purchase gifts for 243 children via the stocking tree at Tom’s Family Market and donations to Toys for Kids at Citizens National Bank.

Terry Materna, who has been helping run the event for many years, was overwhelmed by the community support the group

received this year. Materna said the weather the night they were to pack  the boxes was terrible and he didn’t think anyone would show up to help. To his surprise around 80 people were there to help package the boxes.

Distribution day was no different as many people were asking what they could do to help, and even offered to deliver a few of the boxes and gifts to those who couldn’t make it to St. Paul Hall to pick them up.

“I appreciate all the help that was given, it was wonderful how many people were just willing to step up and help. The whole community made this possible,” said Materna.

With Christmas just around the corner the community of Onaway worked hard to make sure everyone can have a good Christmas. The benefits of living in a small community shine especially bright in Onaway.
