Onaway girls get first win of season against Boyne Falls

The Onaway High School varsity girls’ basketball team snapped a season-opening three-game losing streak Monday with an impressive 53-36 win over visiting Boyne Falls.

The Cardinals led the contest throughout, going up 13-7 after one period, 31-14 at the half, and 40-20 through three frames. Erika Price led the way, knocking down three treys and scoring 13 of her 18 points in the first half.

Lexi Szymoniak added 13 points, Devin Bristley had 11, and Jade Galer finished eight, as the Cardinals improved to 1-3.

Earlier in the evening, the OHS JV won its first game of the year, 34-30 in overtime, over Boyne Falls. Onaway led 5-2 after one quarter, 12-10 at the half, and 18-17 through three. Things were knotted at 25 at the end of regulation.

Taylor Ehrke paced the Cardinals with 16 points. Styler Butler chipped in with six points in the win.

Last Friday, the varsity Cards lost at Gaylord St. Mary, 49-26. Onaway trailed just 13-11 after one period, but fell behind 31-16 by the half and trailed 43-18 through three quarters. Szymoniak had nine points, and Price had eight for OHS.

The Red Bird JV dropped its game to the Snowbirds, 52-5.

Onaway, which was scheduled to travel to Central Lake on Wednesday, will travel to Inland Lakes tonight (Friday).
