Vikings keep winning streak alive with convincing win

There has been no place like home for the Posen girls’ basketball team over the last 30 games, who defeated their county rival Rogers City last Friday in front of an impressive holiday crowd.

The winning formula has involved fast first quarter starts, and they did not deviate from that with a 20-0 first quarter on their way to a 58-20 victory.

All-state center Korynn Hincka scored 17 of Posen’s first 20 points and finished with a game-high 28 points. The Vikings used full-court pressure and was in command after two quarters, 33-1.

SENIORS KORYNN HINCKA (44) and Ashley Hilla (20) battled for position in the paint.

The Hurons were without key players in the contest and lost to Posen for the second time in 10 days. Only the first meeting between the schools counted toward the North Star League (NSL) standings.

Posen improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the league. The Hurons finish the 2013 portion of the schedule with a 4-2 record and are 3-1 in the NSL. The only losses have been to Posen.

“Posen’s a great team. I am proud the way my girls came out with the low numbers we have and they battled right to the end,” said Rogers City coach Gary Bisson.

Viking coach Karl Momrik was pleased with the way his squad played team defense. They cut off the passing lanes and got the ball inside to Korynn, who scored nine straight to end the first quarter.

Posen’s defense did not allow a field goal until the six-minute mark of the third. Courtney Streich put it in and got hot from the field and netted a team-best 11.

“The last time we scored 14 points against an outstanding Posen team, this time we scored 20,” said Bisson. “We made a nice run in the fourth quarter.”

Bisson looks forward to the coming weeks and getting his missing players back. He had eight of the 13 players in Posen. “Everything seems to work a lot better when everybody is working together.”

Korynn scored seven of the first nine points of the game, sandwiched between a Jenna Hincka free throw.

Ashley Meyers made it 11-0 with a field goal and would net 10 by the end of the night.

Taylor Chojnacki’s jumper at the start of the second made it 22-0, just ahead of Rogers City’s first point. Cassi

dy Purgiel’s free throw with 7:26 left, got Rogers City on the board.

The Vikings would score the next 11 until halftime, including a trey from Meyers and a jumper by Angellica Patterson.

With the score 40-7, Posen went on a 12-point run, which included 3-point play by Kayla Lenard.

“I think we came out with a lot of energy and intensity, and I know we wanted to come out with a big win tonight,” said Korynn Hincka.

Momrik said the schedule gets tougher with a road game at Hillman and a home contest with Cedarville, Jan. 8.

The Hurons are in action next Jan. hosting Onaway.

The Posen junior varsity pulled out a 36-33 win over their rivals. Jolene Reese had 15 for the Vikings, while Brooke Dubie put in 15 for the Hurons. Elizabeth Kowalski added 11 for the winners.
