Huron girls go 2-0, tied atop conference standings

The Rogers City Hurons bowling teams traveled to Gaylord Saturday for Northern Michigan Bowling Conference competition.

The girls’ team went 2-0 on the day to move to 5-1 overall, tied with Cheboygan and Petoskey for first place in the conference.

Rogers City defeated St. Ignace 30-0 as they won the baker games (159-112, 149-126), baker game totals (308-238), regular game one 888-606, regular game two 816-634 and regular game totals 1,704-1,240 and did not sacrifice a single individual-point in the match.

Next up the Hurons defeated Petoskey, handing them their first loss of the season, 17.5-12.5. Rogers City won the first baker game 168-138 before dropping the second 138-143 while taking totals 306-281 to take a 6-4 lead. Rogers City lost the first regular-game 789-792 falling behind 8.5-10.5.

The girls rallied back to take game two 736-714 and totals 1,525-1,506 and take the match.

Senior Taylor Rhode won all four of her individual points on the day rolling scores of 135, 121, 187 and 133. Rebecca Myers won all three of her possible points with scores of 129, 167 and 138. Nicole Bannasch took three of four points (257, 235, 148, 164). Alana Wirgau (155, 161, 138) took two individual points. Rebecca Bannasch (212, 158, 149, 156) took two and one-half points on the day. Amber Nowicki (141, 145) took one individual point.

The 888 the team rolled in the first regular-game against St. Ignace is the highest bowled in the conference this season. Nicole Bannasch’s 257 game is the highest bowled in the conference this season and Wirgau is second in the conference with a 178.4 average. Wirgau is now second overall in the conference standings, 11 points behind Gaylord’s Ally Sobeck.

THE BOYS’ team lost to Alpena 9-21 and are now 2-1 in the conference.

The Hurons won the first baker game 194-148 before losing the second 159-206 and totals 353-354. They then lost both regular-games (870-971, 873-953) and totals 1,743-1,924 to fall in the match.

Sophomore Corey Grulke won both of his individual points in the match with scores of 208 and

197. Junior Alex Darga also won both of his points with scores of 201 and 169. Freshman Andrew Radke won one point with scores of 154 and 190. Jacob Hilla (160, 166), Bailey Budnik (147) and Josh Foster (151) also bowled for the Hurons.

Despite the loss the Hurons still hold the record for high team game (1,138), high team series (2,100), high baker game (216) and high baker series (398) this season in the conference.

Grulke is second in the conference standings for average with a 206.7 and is second in overall conference points standings. Darga is fourth in the overall standings for the conference.

The teams will be in action again Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. in Cheboygan.
