Hurons go 4-1 at Gladwin, Ryan earns 100th victory

The Rogers City Hurons varsity wrestling team traveled to Gladwin Saturday for an 18-team dual tournament. The Hurons fell to the host school 34-33 in their first match of the day but rallied back with four wins to go 4-1 on the day. The Hurons are now 17-4 on the season.

Against Gladwin senior Jack Ryan (152) earned his 100th-career victory with a 10-8 win. The Hurons jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the dual when Tommy Vogelheim (103) won by void. After Tristan Baller (112) was pinned and Rogers City voided 119 the score was 6-12.

Sophomore Justin Saile (125) won by pin in 5:32 to tie the match at 12. Senior Noah Sobeck (130) pinned his opponent in 30 seconds to give the Hurons the 18-12 lead. Junior Cameron Urban (135) lost in overtime to make it 18-15 and junior Cole Henry was pinned at 140 pounds giving Gladwin the 21-18 lead.

Junior Jacob Sobeck (145) won by pin in 4:52 and Ryan’s decision made it 27-21 in favor of the Hurons. Junior Austin Bober lost 3-1 at 160 pounds and senior Jared LaFleche lost 11-0 at 171 pounds to make it 27-28. The teams double voided at 189 pounds before senior Andrew Selke (215) won by void and Rogers City voided at 285 to give Gladwin the one point advantage.

THE HURONS rebounded from the loss defeating Chippewa Hills 51-23. Vogelheim again won by void and Baller fell by technical fall to make it 6-5. The Hurons voided 119 pounds to fall behind 11-6 but a 6-4 win by Saile and a void to Noah Sobeck made it 15-11 in favor of the Hurons and they never looked back.

Urban won by pin in 1:26, Henry lost by pin as did Zach Myers at 145 pounds. Jacob Sobeck and Ryan each won by pin, Bober won by void and LaFleche and Selke each won by pin to make it 51-23 as both teams were void at 285 pounds.

Next up Rogers City defeated Bay City John Glenn 37-25. Vogelheim won by void to start the match before Baller was pinned and the Hurons voided 119 to make it 6-12.  Saile won 11-4 to make it 9-12. Noah Sobeck lost 4-3 before Urban won by pin in 3:02 to tie the score at 15. Henry was pinned before Jacob Sobeck won 12-2 making it 19-21. Ryan lost 13-0 but Bober came through with a pin in 1:43 to tie the score at 25. Lafleche won by pin and Selke won by pin as the teams were both void at 189 and 285.

Reed City was the next victim of the Hurons as Rogers City won 41-36. Voids to Vogelheim and Baller gave Rogers City the early advantage and the Hurons never looked back as they led the entire match. Saile won by void, Urban won by void, Jacob Sobeck won by pin, Bober won by disqualification and Selke won by technical fall in the match.

In the final match of the day the Hurons defeated Ionia 45-30. Rogers City was down 0-18 going into the 125 pound match when Saile won 6-2 to get the Hurons on the scoreboard. Noah Sobeck and Urban each won by pin to make it 15-18. Henry would lose by pin at 140 and Jacob Sobeck won by pin to make it 21-24. Ryan, Bober and LaFleche each won by pin to make it 39-24. Rogers City voided 189 pounds and Selke won by void at 215 before the teams double voided 285 to end the match.

Undefeated wrestlers on the day were Saile, Jacob Sobeck and Selke. Vogelheim, Urban and Bober were each 4-1 on the day.

LAST WEDNESDAY the Hurons traveled to St. Ignace. The Hurons defeated Sault Ste. Marie 42-28 and the host Saints 48-18. Double winners on the day were Saile, Urban, Jacob Sobeck, Bober, LaFleche and Selke. Vogelheim, Baller, Noah Sobeck and Ryan each went 1-1 on the day.

The Hurons hosted a North Star League (NSL) quad Wednesday (after press time) and will be in Petoskey Saturday before hosting the final NSL quad of the season next Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m.
