OHS wrestlers continue to make strides; four medal at Ionia

“We looked good at times and we looked very young as well, but overall we competed in nearly every match,” said Onaway High School wrestling coach after his team competed Saturday at the annual Mike Adams Invitational at Ionia.

Nine Cardinal wrestlers made the trip and four came home with medals. Joe Traynham was third at 119 pounds, Isaac Nave was fourth at 125, Matthew Tollini was fourth at 171, and Jamal Porter was sixth at 215.

Traynham started his day with three dominating wins before falling in the final match of pool play. He bounced back with a win in the consolation match to finish 4-1.

Nave pinned his first two opponents, lost in the final match of pool play, then dropped a tough, 4-3, match in the consolation round to finish 2-2.

Tollini, who came into the tourney unseeded, pinned his first three opponents before falling to the top seed at 171 and dropping the match for third to finish 3-2.

Jesse Watson, Caleb Gabrysiak, Troy Klein, Juan Janeczek, and Frankie Ramos also competed at the tournament.

“We definitely had some matches that we’d like back,” said Grant. “But it is about getting better every day and as a group I think we did that.”

The Cardinal wrestlers will be back in action Saturday at a tournament at Roscommon.
