Still perfect, Posen is 10-0; Hincka within nine of milestone

It’s exam week at Posen High School and the Viking girls’ basketball team had a midseason test of their own against an undefeated team. They passed the test with an impressive win over undefeated Arenac-Eastern (A-E), 50-28.

The Vikings wore the Eagles down, physically and mentally, with solid defense. Korynn Hincka had a game-high  28 points and moved to within nine points of the 2,000 point plateau. The Grand Valley State University-bound senior could get it in the first half of Friday’s home contest against Au Gres. She should become the first player in the history of the North Star League to reach the mark.

Hincka and fellow senior Ashley Meyers had outstanding nights underneath the basket as well with a combined 28 rebounds.

“It was a great defensive effort,” said Posen coach Karl Momrik. “We could have played better, but we played a good team. To hold a team that is averaging 60 points a game to 28, you can’t ask for better than that.”

Posen improves to 10-0 overall, which should further solidify their No. 2 Associated Press (AP) ranking in Class D. Crystal Falls Forest Park is No. 1 in the AP and Detroit Free Press rankings.

It was an intense start with more jump balls than points in the first couple of minutes of the game. There were four jump balls and only two points on the board, scored on Posen’s first offensive play of the night, which resulted in a layup by Meyers.

The tide turned when Posen went up 6-2. A-E remained patient on offense and put the ball in the hole. The Eagles scored six straight points and went up by two, which woke the Posen fans. A-E led 8-7 at the end of one, 8-7, but it was the last time.

Meyers opened the second with a 3-pointer and Posen out in front, 10-8. At 12-11, the Vikings took over with a 13-0 run to halftime. The run included a four-point play involving a free throw made by Kayla Lenard. She came away with a steal and a feed to Hincka who put it up and in, and was fouled. She made the shot for a 12-point lead.

Hincka also came up w

ith a steal with two seconds left and went up for an easy bucket.

The Eagles lost their best player, sophomore Elizabeth Nelson with five fouls in the opening minute of the third. She had been defending Korynn. The Eagles lacked the depth to keep up.

Hincka scored nine in the third.

“We dominated the board and did not allow much offensively and pulled away,” said Momrik. Posen is 6-0 in the North Star League with a one-game lead. The conference winning streak is now at 53.

Posen knocked off Atlanta, 80-9, last week. Hincka had 31, while Meyers had 15. Angellica Patterson put in 13.

Junior varsity scores from the Atlanta were not made available.
