Three OHS wrestlers compete at Northern Michigan Championships

Three members of the Onaway High School wrestling team competed Saturday at the highly-competitive Northern Michigan Championships in Gaylord, with two bringing home medals.

Joe Traynham, wrestling at 112 pounds, went 2-1 on the day and finished third. He won his first match by 17-1 technical fall over Denham Miron of Escanaba.

Traynham dropped his semifinal match, 12-4, to eventual 112-pound champion Trent Lashuay of Gaylord before bouncing back to win the match for third by 17-0 technical fall over Travis Harding of Pinconning.

Casey Watson, wrestling at 189 pounds, pinned Mick Hinckle of Charlevoix at the 3:44 mark in his quarterfinal match. In the semis, he was pinned by Jeff Meyers of Grayling in 4:53.

Watson then was pinned in 4:13 by Petoskey’s Trevor Denoyer in the match for third, finishing fourth. Frankie Ramos also competed at the tournament for Onaway, going 0-2 on the day.

“We didn’t have the day we were looking for,” said coach Mark Grant. “We lost focus and made critical mistakes that cost us some important wins. Hopefully, though, we learned from it and it will make us better in the weeks ahead.”

A few day

s earlier, the Cards dropped dual meet matches to Ogemaw Heights (65-11) and Whittemore-Prescott (66-18). Traynham won by pin and Watson won by technical fall in the match against Ogemaw.

Traynham and Watson both won by pin, while Matthew Tollini won by void, in the match against Whittemore.

Last Friday, several OHS wrestlers competed at a JV-level tournament at Gaylord, with Eli Godsey (160 pounds) and Mike Hull (189) finishing second, and Juan Janeczek (152) and Troy Klein (160) taking third.

The Cardinal wrestlers are scheduled to compete Saturday in the Straits Area Conference tournament.
