Wrestlers win Alpena tournament

The Rogers City Hurons’ wrestling team went a perfect 5-0 Saturday to capture the Alpena Art Gillespie invitational.

The Hurons started the day defeating Frankfort 48-16. Junior Cameron Urban (135) started the dual for the Hurons with a 13-4 win. Jacob Sobeck (145), Jack Ryan (152), Austin Bober (160) and Jared LaFleche (171) followed with pins to make it 28-6. Andrew Selke (215) won by void to extend the Hurons’ lead going into the lightweights.

Tommy Vogelheim won 9-7 at 103, Justin Saile (125) and Noah Sobeck (130) both won by pin to make it 48-16.

Next up was Grayling and the Hurons were tied at six after Jacob Sobeck earned a quick pin at 145 pounds. Ryan followed with a pin to make it 12-6 in favor of the Hurons. Bober lost a tough 9-5 match and LaFleche was pinned giving Grayling the 15-12 advantage. Grayling took a void at 189 pounds to build their lead to 21-12.

Selke then won by pin to make it 18-21 before Grayling picked up six more points with a void at heavyweight to make it 18-27. Vogelheim and Tristan Baller (112) won by void to make it 30-27 in favor of the Hurons. Neither team had a wrestler at 119 pounds and Saile took  a void at 125 to make it 36-27 in favor of the Hurons.

Noah Sobeck won by pin and Urban ended the dual with a pin in 36 seconds to make it 48-27.

The Hurons then took on the host Wildcats. The dual started with the third meeting of Jacob Sobeck and R.J. Centala. Jacob Sobeck again took the match this time 9-2 to give the Hurons a 3-0 lead. Ryan followed with a pin to make it 9-0 before Bober lost a tight 6-1 match to make it 9-3.

LaFleche won by pin before a double void at 189 pounds. Selke earned a pin and Rogers City voided at 285 pounds to make it 21-9.

Vogelheim won by void, Baller earned a pin, Saile won by void, Noah Sobeck won by pin, Urban won by pin and Zach Myers (140) earned a void to make the final score 57-9.

ROGERS CITY took on Mancelona in the fourth round winning 66-6 with Mancelona’s only points coming from a void at 119 pounds. The Hurons didn’t drop a match in the dual winning by void in five matches and pin in six others.

The highlight of the match was Cameron Urban’s win by pin in 2:54 as it was his 100th-career victory making him the 49th member of the century club in Rogers City wrestling history and joining his brother Keegan on that list.

ay with a 63-12 win over Oscoda. Bober, LaFleche, Urban, Myers and Jacob Sobeck won by void. Selke, Vogelheim, Baller, Saile and Noah Sobeck won by pin and Ryan won 11-6.

The Hurons ended the day with a 44-6 record overall. Undefeated wrestlers were Vogelheim, Saile, Noah Sobeck, Urban, Jacob Sobeck, Ryan and Selke. Baller and LaFleche each went 4-1 on the day and Myers and Bober were each 3-2 on the day.

URBAN WAS named the most valuable wrestler of the tournament as he won three matches by pin, one by major decision and one via void as well as earning his 100th victory.

The Hurons were in St. Ignace Wednesday (after press time) and will travel to the Gladwin duals Saturday. They will host a North Star League Quad next Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m.
