Historic run ends for team at quarterfinals

Dreams of a trip to the Breslin Center in East Lansing fell eight minutes short for the Lady Vikings in Tuesday’s Class D quarterfinal game at Sault Ste. Marie High School.

Posen’s (25-1) undefeated season came to an end at the hands of the number one ranked Crystal Falls Forest Park (25-0), 69-56.

Ashley Meyers’ 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the third quarter put the Vikings up by one, 47-46, to erase a seven-point halftime deficit. It is about the time Miss Basketball Lexi Gussert took it up a notch and scored 15 of her game-high 26 points. Forest Park (FP) outscored the Vikings 23-9 in the final quarter.

Posen senior Korynn Hincka, the most prolific scorer in school history, finished with 25 points.

“I am so proud of my team, they made my senior year, the best year possible,” said Korynn Hincka. “I am just so proud.”

Seniors Austin Sharpe, Meyers and Korynn Hincka were all in double digits and combined to score 49 of the Vikings 56 points.

“We left it all on the floor,” said head coach Karl Momrik. “We’re obviously very disappointed. We gained eight points in the third, and thought we had things going our way, but we just could not close it out.”

The 2013-14 Lady Vikings made history by becoming the first to win a regional championship and were looking to extend the ride all the way to the final four.
