The Onaway Cardinals softball team traveled to Posen Wednesday for a doubleheader, their second action of the season. The Cardinals dropped both games to No. 5 ranked Posen 8-3 and 13-0 but showed improvement as they committed just one error on the day.
Freshman Skylar Butler took the loss in game one, going six innings allowing 10 hits and three walks while striking out six. Offensively the Cardinals had just two hits, a double from Olivia McDonald followed by a homerun over the right centerfield fence by Ashley LaLonde.
Jade Galer had a defensive highlight in the late innings when Posen had runners on. She leaped up to snag a line drive at her shortstop position and tagged the runner leading off second base for a double play.
The Cardinals were making solid contact against Posen senior pitcher Ashley Myers, who holds the record for pitching victories at Posen, but couldn’t get the balls to go where the defenders weren’t.
Alyssa Nash took the loss in game two as Posen scored all 13 of its runs in the first inning. “Once she settled down out there things went well,” said coach Jodi Brewbaker. Nash allowed
“We improved tremendously on our defense as we committed just one error in two games as compared to the numerous errors we had to open the season at Hillman,” said coach Brewbaker.
The Cardinals returned to the field for the first time since April 8 when they took on No. 7 ranked Hillman to start the season.
“We are young. We don’t have a lot of experience but we are coming together. Our goal is to improve every game and we are doing that,” said coach Brewbaker.
The Cardinals were in action Thursday (after press time) to open the Ski Valley Conference season at Inland Lakes. They will be at the Rogers City tournament Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The tournament will feature Onaway, Posen and Rogers City.
