Cards fire back and get much-deserved win

The Cardinal football team earned its first win of the season Friday on the home field. They staked Pellston to a 14-0 lead before coming alive with 22 unanswered points.

It was a much-deserved win for a group of guys that’s already been through a lot.

A win like that makes coming to practice after school each night so much more bearable. Their record is 1-2, 1-1. The Hornets are winless.

“It’s great,” said head coach Jim Cleaver of the mood in practice Wednesday night. “They are in good spirits.”

Cleaver is pleased to get the win, but was driving home the point that the Cards have to come out and play four quarters of football because this week’s opponent Central Lake, or any heavyweights coming up on the schedule in the coming weeks, will not be so forgiving.

Cleaver believes the way his squad played in the second half, “They can be a playoff team.”

In the wake of the win, Cleaver has not been taking it easy on the guys in preparation for a tough road trip to Central Lake.

“I’m not down here to take it easy on them,” said Cleaver, as the offense ran through plays on game field.

Pellston scored on its offensive play of the game to take the early lead. The Cards got on the board with a 65-yard touchdown strike from Cody Morell to Bradley Brewbaker. Cortez Washington punched in the two-point conversion.

The score was 14-8 at the half, but the Cards came out of the break firing on all cy

linders and scored on their first drive of the third quarter.

The passing game again showed its potency with Morell hooking up with Derick Wregglesworth on a 56-yard touchdown pass. Washington scored the conversion again.

Ray Self capped off the scoring to put the win away on a three-yard touchdown reception.

Brewbaker finished with 114 yards receiving and was named the offensive player of the week on MaxPreps. Washington was the leading rusher with 84.

Cody Whitsitt was named defensive player of the week on the Web site. He had three tackles. Morell led the defense with seven tackles.

The rest of the tackles follow: Self five tackles, Jason Price 5, Washington 4, Brewbaker 2, DJ Fenstermaker 2, Wregglesworth 1, Dallas Hyde 1, Jonathan Bay 1.
