Cards seek first win tonight at home

Following blowout losses against two schools that seem destined for the playoffs in late October, the under manned Onaway football team hosts the Pellston Hornets tonight at Cardinal Stadium.

Pellston lost its first two games, 45-0 to Gaylord St. Mary and 75-14 to Joburg.

The Cards lost last Friday at Mancelona, 52-18. The Ironmen have made four straight playoff appearances.

Cardinal coach Jim Cleaver said his squad played well in the second half against the Ironmen.

Raymond Self is off to the races after taking the handoff from Cody Morell.

Cortez Washington rushed for two touchdowns as the teams played to a 12-all tie in the final 24 minutes.

“If they would have played the whole game like they did that second half, I think we would have pulled that game out,” said Cleaver.

The coach and the players are looking forward to getting that first win. “I think we can pull this one out,” the coach said. “I’m not looking past them, but we have to play our game and the boys have to play all four quarters.”

The rost

er is now at 14 after Ethan Arkwood was diagnosed with a concussion and will be out the rest of the year. The coach is hopeful that there might be a few students that will join the team and provide some much needed help.

Washington rushed the ball 10 times for 80 yards, while Cody Morell was six for 35 on the ground and 2-for-7 passing for 35 yards. Washington was 3-for-10 passing for 45 yards.

DJ Fenstermaker led the team with 14 tackles, Morell had 10, Cody Whitsitt nine, while Brewbaker and Self both had eight apiece.

Game time tonight is at 7 p.m.
