Chamber officers elected

The formation of the new Onaway Area Chamber of Commerce is progressing well.

A meeting was conducted Sept. 3 to elect officers.

Charlie Nyhus

Moran Iron Works executive director of business development Charlie Nyhus was elected as the president. Brenda Archambo, who has been an influential leader with the Sturgeon for Tomorrow program, is vice president.

Marisue Moreau is the treasurer, while Jessica Havel will be the secretary.

“We are talking to a couple of more folks,” said Nyhus, who has deep roots in the community.

Nyhus’ great-great-grandfather homesteaded property in Onaway, coming to the area in a covered wagon. His grandmother was one of 11 children and he has a cabin on the south end of Black Lake.

“I also was fortunate to marry a gal who graduated from Onaway High School in 1978, Mary Margaret Schwartz,” he said. “So, this has been home.”

Nyhus said he’s had a successful career, “That has taken me from the north to the south. I’ve always been involved in progressive companies and I’

ve always given back to the community and I’ve participated on chamber and manufacturing alliances to support current businesses, community infrastructure, community youth as well as the support and growth of the community.”

Nyhus said the current matter before the chamber is pulling together the appropriate documentation, that being the articles of incorporation.

He said the board has been trying to look back at what previous chamber boards have done in the past, “But really see how we can grown for the future. That is to support the community and to be subservient to the local businesses.”
