First Tuesday with friends enters ninth season

The Onaway Friends of the Library is proud to announce the schedule for the ninth season of the First Tuesday with Friends series. The series will begin Oct. 7 and run on the first Tuesday of each month through April. All of the programs will be held at the Onaway Courthouse at 1 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month. The series kicks off with Mardi Link as the featured presenter Oct. 7. When Mardi Link finds herself a newly single mother after nineteen years of marriage, she becomes determined to remain in her century-old farmhouse and raise her three sons on well-water, dirt and chopping wood. She arms herself with her determination and faces each challenge with her persistent sense of humor and steadfast optimism. Mardi will tell of her trials, tears and triumphs. Dec. 2 is a discussion of the legend of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Terry Begnoche, site manager of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, will tell the tale of the most controversial and mysterious shipwreck on the Great Lakes. He will speak of the mystery surrounding the Edmund Fitzgerald and the conflicting theories of the causes of the shipwreck.

New this year for the January presentation will be a jazz session. All interested musicians and singers are invited to come perform at the afternoon jazz session where they will be able to play and sing their favorite songs. Everything will be spontaneous. The microphone will be open and all are welcome as the friends hope for an enjoyable fun-filled afternoon of music.

thier presents Feb. 3, discussing man’s impact on the Cheboygan River Watershed. Gauthier is a retired senior hydrologist at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and will be discussing how people have impacted the watershed which covers 1,400 square miles and includes the interconnected Black, Mullet and Burt Lakes and all of the inland waterway.

March 3 Michael Cromley, a  retired teacher and professor, will discuss the history of the wolf here and around the world. He will talk about the wolve’s migration into the upper and lower Michigan peninsulas, their behavior and the problems associated with them.

Sue Good will present April 7 on wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. Good, of Northeraire Wildlife Rescue, will inspire the audience with her presentation of tales and pictures of wildlife. She has been rescuing, working with and releasing animals for 11 years.
