Onaway tops Pellston in home game

The Onaway girls played run-and-gun with the Pellston Hornets and came out on top of a 65-36 score. Even though the Hornets suited up just six players, and ended up playing four, after two players fouled out, the visitors pushed the pace of the game.

That suited the Cards just fine, as coach Marty Mix kept the players fresh with a deep bench. Onaway scored the first 10 points of the game, with Shelby Wolgast’s rebound shot at the 4:29 mark as the final tally of the run.

Pellston didn’t let the Cards get away from them, as the Hornets used quick possessions to make the score 16-13 at the end of the first quarter. Jade Galer’s 3-pointer with 5:59 left in the second quarter increased the Cardinal lead to 22-15. From there the pace of the game slowed as the teams spent the next three minutes trading trips to the free-throw line.

A 9-0 run near the end of the second quarter built a 35-21 halftime lead.

Lexi Szymoniak, who played a strong game inside, snared a rebound and hit the basket. Moments later, with 4:21 left in the third quarter, Morganne Badgero’s free-throw made it 47-25. Pellston never challenged for the lead in the second half.

“From start to finish, we did a lot of things correctly. From game one to game four we are gaining all along the way,” Mix said after the game. “I will give credit to the girls on that. They are very athletic and very talented and throughout the season we are going to see that.

Galer led the team with 16 points while Badgero had 12, Madison McLean scored 11 and Szymoniak added 10.

The Cards took a 53-28 win over Boyne Falls Monday. Onaway led all the way taking a 23-12 lead into the second half and using a 21-point third quarter to increase the lead to 43-20 after the third quarter.

Badgero paced the scoring with 20 points, with 14 coming a very stong second half. Szymoniak added 10 points and Galer scored nine. Onaway connected on 15-of-36 from the line while Boyne Falls hit just 4-of-13.

Last Friday, the Cards suffered a 47-20 loss to Bellaire. A two-point first quarter put the Cards in the hole to start the game. Szymoniak led the team with 10 points.
