The Rogers City Huron girls’ basketball team was in Onaway Monday for a rematch with the Cardinals. It was the Hurons first game since a Dec. 16, 2014 game at Oscoda. The Hurons and Cardinals battled in the first game of the season with the Cardinals coming out on top 38-33. In the first game for both teams of 2015 it was the Cardinals coming out on top again, this time 50-38.

“Our legs are out of it. We came off a big Christmas break. I am not one for excuses but you can tell the difference. We will build from this. We will get back in shape, we will be a contender again,” said coach Gary Bisson.

The Hurons scored first in the contest with a basket by senior Cassidy Purgiel, she was fouled on the shot as well but was unable to convert the three-point play. The Hurons  held their only lead of the game until the 5:58 mark when a basket by Onaway senior Morganne Badgero tied the game.

It would not stay tied for long as Onaway took a 5-2 lead on a three from senior Shyanne Corey with 5:15 left in the opening quarter. Onaway would build the lead to 10-2 before Rogers City senior Alexa Quaine scored with 2:15 left in the quarter. The first quarter ended with the Cardinals leading 12-6.

Rogers City continued to struggle to find offense in the second quarter as they were outscored 12-5 to trail 24-11 at halftime. Senior point-guard Logan Fleming was the only Huron able to score in the quarter with all five Rogers City points.

With just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter, Fleming would hit a three to bring her team within 12 points trailing 30-18. Onaway then went on a 11-0 run to end the quarter and take a 41-18 lead.

berger added 4 and 2 respectively.
