Posen shoots for sixth-straight district trophy, Onaway’s season ends

The matchup for the Class D district final has been set in Hillman.

Posen (15-6) will be shooting for its 6th-straight district title and a trip to the regional tournament in Pellston.

Brooke Ciarkowski topped the scoring sheet with five, 3-pointers and a game-high 21 in an 80-10 trouncing of Wolverine in Monday’s district semifinal.

There was more drama in the second semifinal game of the night pitting Hillman and Onaway. Hillman played well at the opening tip, jumping out to an 8-0 lead and the Lady Cards played catchup the rest of the night.

en Onaway got it to within two, 14-12, Hillman answered and took a seven-point lead. When Onaway got it back to within four, 20-16, the Lady Tigers went on a 7-0 run and controlled the second half. The final score was 56-42.

The Cards’ Lexi Szymoniak was in foul trouble most of the game, but still managed 11 points. She was the only Cardinal in double digits. Vanessa Schook had 28.

Hillman is 17-4 and looking for its first district title since 2002. the teams split during the regular season with both winning the home court matchups.

The district final is Wednesday at 6 p.m. back in Hillman.

Rogers City plays in Boyne City in the Class C district tournament Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Hurons face Harbor Springs, a 47-34 winner over East Jordan. Boyne City, a 44-30 winner over Inland Lakes, takes on Charlevoix in the late game. The Boyne City district final is set for Friday at 7 p.m. The winner will play in the Escanaba regional.
