The season could not have started better for the Onaway baseball team. Zeke Nave tossed a complete game shutout against Brethren and set a new school record with 17 strikeouts. The old record was held by Andrew Prow (14).

Head coach Mike Crull commented that Zeke had his curve ball working well in the contest.

The Cards, who were playing in the Kingsley tournament last Saturday, won the game, 5-0. Cody Whitsitt had a fine day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. He knocked in two and stole two bases.

Ray Self was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Nave had a pair of sacrifice flies.

The Red Birds got the home team in the championship game and were down 9-4 after the top of the fifth and came back with seven runs to take an 11-9 lead. It would not hold as Kingsley came back to steal it in the last inning, 12-11.

Trevor Wregglesworth had three RBI. Whitsitt, Derick Wregglesworth and Zack Prow all had two RBI each.

Crull’s team had a chance to get in a couple of doubleheaders not on the original schedule with

road tilts at Joburg and Hillman, Monday and Tuesday.

Joburg was nonconference, so Crull had a lot of his younger players on the field. The scores were 14-4 and 15-3; however, the experience will be a lot more valuable going forward.

At Hillman, pitchers gave up too many free passes, 18 in all. The squad also committed about a dozen errors in 10-3 and 12-6 losses.

Trevor Wregglesworth was 3-for-3 with three RBI. Derick Wregglesworth, Juan Janeczek, Whitsitt and Nave all had hits.

Whitsitt was 3-for-4 in the nightcap with two runs score. Cooper Leach, Zack Prow and Nave all a RBI each.
